Finding a good sunscreen to protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun can be a bit tricky. Cheap, common brands found in grocery stores and pharmacies often don’t protect you from all rays and can be so oily that they cause breakouts or further complications. Luckily, there are some great sun blocks out there that work well and don’t dish out additional damage. One such block is Obagi’s sunscreen called Sun Shield Matte with SPF 50. Below we talk about this sunscreen in more detail.

Quick Verdict

If you’re looking for an excellent, effective sunblock to wear at the beach or just use daily to protect your skin, Sun Shield is a superb choice. It’s not overly thick, it doesn’t make your skin feel oily, and it blocks out the worst that the sun has to offer.

Obagi Sunscreen Review

Sun Shield is Obagi’s take on a sunscreen. It’s a broad-spectrum formula that keeps your skin from getting damaged by both UVA and UVB rays. These rays can do a number of things including produce sunburns, cause brown spots on the skin, age your skin at an accelerated rate, and even increase the likeliness that you’ll develop skin cancer.

That’s why it’s important that you protect your skin from both sun ray types. A lot of big companies that make sunscreens used to produce products that only protected against one ray type but, as of late, many are moving toward producing more broad-spectrum style products.

While there are definitely cheaper brands out there Obagi makes a very solid sunscreen that is much better than the more common brands. It’s broad-spectrum and has SPF 50 which is rather common. But what makes it different and better is the fact that it’s non-greasy, PABA-free, and fragrance-free. This formula is designed to not make your skin too oily, cause acne breakouts, or otherwise ruin your skin.

Obagi’s Sun Shield Matte is one of the only sunscreens that can be safely used on all skin types. It’s meant to be applied once every 30 minutes (like most other sunblocks). One of the main drawbacks with this product is that it isn’t waterproof.

Best Sunblock I’ve Tried

Repeat user. Provides protection, but unlike most sunblocks that I have tried it won’t clog pores or irritate skin. This product provides enough moisture so that no additional moisturizer is needed during summer months.

Love it. Clear and leaves my skin very soft nd no greasy… like other suncreams.

Amazon review

Most people agree that this is one of the best sunscreens they’ve ever used. It’s been noted that it can be worn well under makeup, it doesn’t cause acne flare-ups like other sun blocks do, it goes on smooth, and it doesn’t leave your skin looking chalky white, either.

Our Review

In all honesty, we believe Obagi’s Sun Shield Matte with SPF 50 is the absolute best sunscreen available today. Yes, it is a little pricey. Yes, there are similar sun blocks that are less expensive.

But when it comes to 100% protection from UVA and UVB rays, having a screen that isn’t super oily or whitening, and when it comes to what’s best for your skin, this product is the top of the line.

You can get a much cheaper broad-spectrum lotion for sun protection from brands like Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic but they tend to be very oily, run when you put them on, and make your skin look nasty and white.

If you don’t want to spend much money these are going to be your best options. But if you want something that’ll actually make a difference for your skin, we highly recommend Obagi’s sunscreen.

Where to Buy

Obagi’s Sun Shield can be hard to come by. It’s only sold in a handful of stores. And the stores that do sell it often overcharge for it. The best place to get it is actually online. Internet retailers such as Amazon sell this product for competitive prices, send out orders very quickly, and have great customer service as well.
